Commencement of a Collaboration to Promote CO2 Absorption and Fixation through Forests

2021.03.18

ENEOS Holdings, Inc. (President: Ota Katsuyuki; hereinafter “ENEOS”) and woodinfo partners (President: Nakamura Hiroyuki; hereinafter “woodinfo”) have started collaborating to promote CO2 absorption and fixation through forests to help realize a Decarbonized, recycling-oriented society. Joining this collaboration as a first step of the endeavor is JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation (President and Chief Executive Officer: Murayama Seiichi; hereinafter referred to as “JX Nippon Mining & Metals”) which, together with the other two companies, has started demonstrations to visualize the amount of CO2 sequestered in idle forests around closed mines owned by JX Nippon Mining & Metals.

Prior to the collaboration, ENEOS invested in woodinfo through its wholly owned subsidiary, ENEOS Innovation Partners LLC (General Manager: Yazaki Yasunori).

In this collaboration, woodinfo’s measurement technology using 3D lasers and drones, as well as its measurement data analysis system, will be used to digitize forest resource information and provide forest managers with the information necessary for forest maintenance and management such as (periodic thinnings, removal of logs, and afforestation). By providing forest managers with such relevant information, the system will contribute to the proper functioning of forests as CO2 sinks and fixers.

Furthermore, we will conduct a demonstration that will visualize the amount of CO2 sequestered by the forest through measurement technologies and measurement data analysis systems with the ultimate aim of converting the sequestered CO2 into credits. ENEOS will purchase the credits through the ENEOS Environmental Value Ecosystem*, which we are aiming to establish in parallel, to provide management support to owners of forests and to create a system that will apply those credits to the ENEOS Group’s CO2 emission reductions.

To examine the most appropriate and efficient method of forest monitoring when it comes to CO2 credits, we will conduct a demonstration using actual forests.

In the demonstration, we will examine various cutting-edge monitoring technologies and methods, including existing measurement technologies, to provide the necessary information for forest maintenance and management and to make forests function appropriately as a source of CO2 absorption and fixation. We will carry out the demonstration in the idle forests owned by JX Nippon Mining & Metals, which still manages a vast area of forest due to its history of operating mines throughout Japan.

The three companies will work together to achieve the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 8, “Decent work and economic growth”; Goal 12, “Responsible consumption and production”; Goal 13, “Climate action”; Goal 15, “Life on land”; and Goal 17, “Partnerships for the goals.” Collaborating to achieve the above goals will serve to accelerate our contribution to realizing a Decarbonized, recycling-oriented society.

*Announced in a news release ENEOS published today entitled “ENEOS to Collaborate in Environmental Value Trading Projects to Promote CO2 Emission Reduction.”
