Collaboration in Building a Circulation Model for Storage Batteries for EV Buses
2019.12.23
Utilizing our knowledge of the electric power business and metal recycling along with BYD’s storage battery technology in China, we have begun collaborating to build a “lease, reuse, and recycle” circulation model for storage batteries oriented toward EV buses.
JXTG Holdings Co., Ltd. (President: Sugimori Tsutomu, hereinafter “JXTG”) and BYD Company’s Japanese subsidiary BYD Japan Co., Ltd. (President: Liu Gakusuke, hereinafter “BYD Japan”) have announced a basic agreement.
We officially announce the start of our collaboration to build a “lease, reuse, and recycle” circulation model for storage batteries oriented toward EV buses.
Storage batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, are expected to be used in various fields, such as EVS power, renewable energy adjustment power, and emergency power supply in the event of disasters.
However, since these power usages have complicated structures, it is difficult to evaluate performance, and so a reuse / recycling mechanism has yet to be established.
Since the JXTG Group has knowledge of the electric power industry and metal recycling, and since BYD has possessed advanced technology and knowledge of storage batteries since the company’s founding, we are proud to hold the world’s top shares in EV sales for the fourth consecutive year since 2015.
By combining these strengths, we will build the following circulation model:
Lease the storage battery to be installed in an EV bus to the bus operator (primary use);
Collect the used storage battery from the EV bus and reuse it as a stationary storage battery (secondary use);
Break down the reused storage battery to its core materials and recycle them as new materials (tertiary use).
In order to build a circulation model, we started in the spring of 2020 a demonstration experiment of EV bus operation in collaboration with a bus operator, information from which we are collecting, such as operation data and the degree of battery consumption from the EV bus leasing stage.
In addition, we are also conducting a demonstration experiment of the “reuse” stage that utilizes as a stationary storage battery the used storage battery of an EV bus provided by BYD Japan.
With the start of this collaboration, both companies will take a step toward realizing a circulation model and aim to establish this model by 2025, including recycling technology and operation.
We shall contribute to the formation of a sustainable, recycling-oriented society through the “leasing, reusing and recycling” of storage batteries.
